- Stop running water anywhere in the house — sinks, laundry, dishwasher. Every gallon has to go somewhere.
- Skip the chemical drain cleaner. It rarely clears a real clog, and it makes the line hazardous for the tech who has to open it.
- Clear a path to the cleanout or the affected fixture if you can. Usually a basement floor or under a sink.
